Letter - New tree planting welcome, but we need to protect established woodlands too!

21 January 2018

Dear Editor,

The Government's plan to create a new Northern Forest that will include Greater Manchester is welcome.

Planting new trees will reduce air pollution, offset carbon emissions, and reduce flooding, but it will not make up for the 98 ancient woodlands which are under threat by from Government's plans to plough ahead with HS2!

The benefits of the Northern Forest will also be undermined locally if the proposals to reduce Greater Manchester's Green Belt go ahead and if other vital woodland areas in Oldham such as Thornley Brook and Ashgrove Valleys are built on.
